Check out these creative ways to decorate with crates outdoors and get ready to create some fun displays!
I remember painting our front door a few summers ago and trying to come up with some kind of idea for decorating the porch afterward.
I browsed Pinterest and to this day, I still use wooden crates on my porch because of the genius of The Design Twins (No, not the Scott brothers – although they’re genius too 😉 ).
Julie and Jodie had used crates on their front porch as a way to add height, which is exactly what I had been trying to do.
We don’t have stairs on our porch, so I wanted to do something that would add some interest to the space.
Once I saw their post, I headed to my local Walmart later that week and bought two crates. I spray painted them white (the outside anyway) and started playing around with them.
Since then, I’ve used them for every season in many different ways. They are so versatile!
I decided to make a “round up” of all the different ways you too can style with crates outside.
How To Decorate With Crates Outdoors
Galvanized Planters.
I found these two planters at a garage sale the same year I painted this front door. I loved the look and knew the faded tones would look so nice against the modern door color.
Canada Day Flag.
Similar to above, except here I placed a Canada Day flag for the occasion. You could add mini stakes, twigs or whatever decor is suited to the Holiday you’d like to decorate for with your crates.
Mums Display.
I loved these big mums that I got at Costco the year I decorated this porch for Fall. Now this is how you decorate with crates outdoors!
Sign & Pumpkins.
I decided to place my “porch” sign on the crate, and this pumpkin peeking out of the crate.
This all happened “accidentally,” I wasn’t even planning to place the crates sideways but I loved how it turned out.
Sometimes the unexpected in decorating are the best parts!
Norfolk Pine Trees.
I used these for Christmas decor, then kept them out for winter decor too.
As you can see, the main idea is always to place something on top of or inside the crate. You can display the crates vertically, horizontally, sideways, upside down, right side up – you name it, I’ve tried it!
Here are some other suggestions, items, or ideas for decorating with crates:
- Birch Logs
- Stake Signs
- “Thanksgiving” produce like corn or apples
- Ferns
- Outdoor Pillows
I’ve used my crates for the third year in a row now. I told myself I would remove them from my porch for Fall this year, but I still kept one up to place my white mums into.
I’m telling you, they’re so fun, inexpensive and versatile! Which is the perfect home decor combination in my book!
